Savannah Now

By: Rosa Mendoza

The pulse of community shifts as Savannah continues to evolve. Savannah, The Great Good Place explored the city’s history and framework of community building, but these highlights—left out of that story—are essential stops to ground yourself in Savannah’s spirit, whether you’re just visiting or planting roots.

1. Live Music at Over Yonder

This intimate venue never disappoints. Music spills out through the garage doors, creating a vibe that’s equal parts raw and magical. Come for the lineup, stay for one of Savannah’s best cheeseburgers and well-priced drinks that set the stage for a good time.

2. Patio at Black Rabbit

Not every social moment has to be loud. This tucked-away patio is perfect for intimate hangs or clandestine conversations. The crowd shifts throughout the day, making it prime for people-watching. Grab a half sandwich for a cheeky snack—or double up and save the rest for later.

3. Front Porch at Rome’s Bar

For the smokers and porch lovers alike. Rome’s Bar serves up incredible food alongside a mostly local crowd. The front porch is shaded, social, and always buzzing with conversation—a true cross-section of Savannah life.

4. Basketball Court at Forsyth Park

A gem for people-watching and joining in. Whether you’re catching a pickup game or stepping on the court yourself, the energy is contagious. If you’re lucky, you might even spot local icon Big Solomando holding court after his epic walk from Jacksonville.

5. Palm Wine

Once a month, Savannah comes together for Palm Wine—a party hosted by Miss Paradise and friends. Queer, straight, anarchist, or fashion-forward, everyone is welcome here. Set behind Eden Super Club (Victory North), usually the last Sunday of the month, it’s one of the best portraits of Savannah now.

6. Explore the Public Squares

Savannah’s soul lives in its squares. Wander through and you’ll find chance encounters, conversations, and community around every corner. Free, accessible, and endlessly alive—this is the city at its most authentic. This selection serves as a reminder that if you are ever restless in Savannah there is always a moment to be had in the public greens.

7. Draft Beer at White Water Craft Ales

This neighborhood gem hums with locals sipping creative brews, chatting, and playing games. With a stellar draft list and a laid-back, open layout, it’s the perfect spot to meet like-minded beer lovers. Not into beer? Their wine selection is solid and fairly priced.

8. Meditate in the Fragrance Garden at Forsyth Park

Step through the iron gates into this rose-filled sanctuary and the world slows down. Whether for quiet meditation, solo reflection, or a romantic pause, the Fragrance Garden is a transformative little haven in the middle of the city.

9. Cash-Only Cocktails at The American Legion

Dive bars rule Savannah, but this no-frills neighborhood spot stands out. With the cheapest drinks in town and a mix of locals from all walks of life, it’s a true equalizer—and one of the best places to experience community over a strong pour.
