Lineage, Liberation, and the Living Revolution
By: Rosa Mendoza
The Revolution Oracle is an evolving creative and spiritual project that explores how liberation lives within us all. Pairing zodiac archetypes with African American liberation figures, the deck is being developed as a living concept — one that honors the foundational role Black leaders have played in expanding human rights while inviting ongoing reflection, dialogue, and community engagement. As a work in process, it is not presented as a finished statement, but as an open invitation to witness, share, and participate in the continuation of revolutionary thought and practice.
This oracle is rooted in a truth history has repeatedly tried to silence: Black liberation has always been a catalyst for human liberation.
Every major expansion of human rights — from the abolition of slavery, to civil rights, to labor protections, to collective organizing, to cultural revolution — has been shaped by the vision, courage, and sacrifice of African American liberation figures. Not as footnotes. Not as symbols. But as architects of freedom itself.
These figures did not merely respond to oppression.
They reimagined the world not just for themselves, but for everyone.
They challenged laws, disrupted systems, rewrote narratives, and insisted — often at great personal cost — that dignity, safety, and sovereignty are not privileges, but birthrights.
This deck, a concept we will holistically build on in months to come, honors those truths.
By pairing each zodiac archetype with an African American liberation figure, this oracle acknowledges that revolution is not abstract. It is lived. It is embodied. It is inherited. Liberation is not an abstract idea — it is a palpable lineage.
These figures represent distinct revolutionary expressions: the initiator, the strategist, the truth-teller, the healer, the visionary, the builder. In doing so, they mirror the zodiac itself — a system that has always described how power moves through all human beings, not just the ones fascism deems deserving.
Highlighting Black liberation figures now is not a trend. It is a correction.
We are living in a moment where rights are again being contested, histories distorted, and progress reframed as threat. In such times, remembering becomes an act of resistance. Naming becomes an act of care. Teaching becomes an act of protection.
This oracle does not place these figures in the past. It recognizes them as ancestors of the present and architects of the future just like me and you.
Their lives remind us that revolution can look like protest or policy, care or courage, imagination or refusal. That liberation is not a single moment, but an ongoing practice — one that each generation must choose to continue.
As you work through these images, you are invited to engage these figures not as distant icons, but as teachers. Listen to the way their revolutionary energy moves through the zodiac archetype they accompany. Notice what awakens in you.
This is not about imitation.
It is about alignment.
The work of liberation is unfinished.
And it has always required many roles.
May this oracle honor those who came before.
May it sharpen our awareness of the present.
May it remind us that the future is built by those willing to imagine — and insist upon — something better.
